Food waste apps are seeing their number of users increased by 14 million

In the wake of growing environmental consciousness and a global shift towards sustainable living, European food waste apps have experienced a significant upswing in Android users over the past year. According to data from App Radar, an app marketing and analytics platform, these apps collectively welcomed an impressive 14 million new Android users during the 12 months leading up to February 2022.

Between March 2021 and February 2022, prominent European food waste apps, including the likes of FoodCloud, saw a remarkable 36% expansion in their Android user base. When combined with iOS downloads, this surge could potentially translate to approximately 75 million users, equivalent to one in ten adults across Europe.

The rise of food waste apps has been particularly notable, driven in part by the ongoing pandemic. This surge underscores a growing consumer demand for sustainable solutions and ethical consumption practices. These apps empower users to combat food waste by connecting surplus food from businesses and individuals with those in need, reducing the environmental impact of discarded food.

While there has been a slight decline in downloads, it is noteworthy that food waste apps continued to gain traction during the first quarter of 2022, with an additional 3.1 million users compared to 3.6 million during the same period in 2021. This steady growth is indicative of the enduring appeal of these apps and the commitment of individuals to adopt more sustainable lifestyles.

Silvio Peruci, Managing Director at App Radar, emphasized the significance of these numbers, stating, “Apps are driving many people to live more sustainably. Almost 14 million app downloads in the past 12 months is a huge number when you consider that each download represents an individual wanting to make a step change in their lifestyle.”

Peruci also highlighted the nascent nature of this market, with many leading apps launching just before or during the pandemic. As a result, the industry is in the early stages of evolution, with ample room for experimentation in various aspects, including service offerings, marketing strategies, and expansion approaches. While certain frontrunners have emerged, they face competition from new entrants aiming to make a meaningful impact in the field of sustainability.

Notably, some food waste apps have demonstrated substantial growth during this period. “Too Good To Go” recorded one of the highest growth rates, adding 9.8 million new Android downloads. It was closely followed by “Olio” with 2.5 million new users and “Phenix” with 1.3 million additions. These three companies have also excelled in terms of lifetime downloads, reinforcing their positions as leaders in the fight against food waste.
