Microsoft is displaying Bing ads within Google Chrome.

Google Chrome users are being prompted to switch to Bing via pop-up ads from Microsoft. While browsing in Chrome, Windows users have been seeing advertisements for Microsoft’s Bing search engine and Bing AI. If users choose to accept these prompts, Microsoft automatically sets Bing as the new default search engine for Chrome instead of Google.

The recent pop-up ads have caused worry among users, who have compared them to malware. However, Microsoft has reassured everyone that these prompts are valid and will only appear once. Caitlin Roulston, director of communications at Microsoft, explained the purpose behind these ads – to give users the choice to set Bing as their default search engine on their device.

Offering options. According to Microsoft’s director of communications, Caitlin Roulston, the company is presenting the pop-up ad as a way for users to select Bing as their device’s primary search engine. In an interview with The Verge, she stated: “This is a one-time notification giving people the choice to set Bing as their default search engine on Chrome.”
“We value providing our customers with choice, so there is an option to dismiss the notification.”

The reason for our concern is that allowing users to change their default search engine could promote a more equitable search market and give advertisers more advertising choices. However, if Microsoft truly wants to persuade users to make Bing their default search engine, using ads that do not mimic malicious software would likely yield better results. When asked for a response, Microsoft has yet to reply according to Search Engine Land.

The timing of the introduction of pop-up ads to simplify changing the default search engine for Windows users aligns with the ongoing Google antitrust trial. The trial accuses Google of using unjust methods to maintain its position as the top search engine in the world. During the trial, Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, who played a crucial role in Bing’s development, testified that individuals have limited options when it comes to selecting their preferred search engine. As he stated, “You wake up in the morning, brush your teeth and search on Google.” He also emphasized that internet search is a significant software category, and despite being a small player in it, Microsoft continues to persist due to its belief that they can contribute to this field. According to Nadella, making breakthroughs in this industry is challenging, but Microsoft remains persistent because they aim to improve competition by treating it as a public utility.
